About

Seattle Speaks German offers convenient online classes designed for busy individuals who want to engage in real conversations in German—not just practice with an app. Led by Frederike Dean, a native speaker and experienced instructor, our classes are supportive, encouraging, and focused on helping students speak authentic German in real-life situations.

My Approach: Real Learning for Real Fluency

You might have heard people say apps and casual conversation practice are enough to learn German, but honestly? I've seen this backfire so many times because you end up swimming in the kiddie pool forever when what you really want is to dive into the ocean of real German conversation. What I do instead is structured courses that give you a solid foundation but also work like a buffet - you can choose what extra support works for your learning style and schedule. Here's why that works better: you actually progress to real fluency instead of getting stuck in beginner mode, and you can learn in the way that fits your busy life. Want to see how this all works in practice? See what's included in your course experience.

Research confirms what many German learners discover: apps work great for vocabulary, but German's complex grammar system needs systematic, structured instruction to truly stick.

I’m Frederike Dean, originally from northern Germany. After studying in Berlin, Prague, and Dresden, I moved to the United States in 2012 with my family. We spent several years in California before relocating to Seattle in 2017. Since then, our family has grown to include two furry companions, and I've happily joined the vibrant Seattle pet-owner community. In my free time, I enjoy exploring Seattle’s neighborhoods, particularly West Seattle, and taking in the stunning mountain views—an awe-inspiring sight for someone from Germany’s flatlands. We also love taking short trips to local towns, camping in the summer, and visiting family and friends in Europe once a year.
