I had tried both Goethe and Duolingo previously, and neither connected with the learning nor made nearly the progress that I did in the Seattle Speaks German, Beginner Level 1 course. My significant other, who is German, also commented that I was making great progress, in a short time, on pronunciation, vocabulary, and asking/answering basic questions. I found the in-class exercises to be very helpful, and the homework ensured that the learning continued beyond the classroom. The additional resources were also helpful; I have bookmarked many of them to use as a reference! As with any learning, the more effort you put in, the better the results, and Frau Dean provides an excellent foundation and structure for learning, in and out of the classroom, as well as in the group setting and independently between class sessions. I actually feel confident now that when I go back to Germany in a couple of months, I will be able to say a few things about myself and ask some basic questions! "I took 1 year of lessons with Frieda, as part of a small group for the first quarter, followed by private lessons for about 9 months. All of those happened online and Frieda did an incredible job to create useful content and entertaining activities suited to online classes - something not so many teachers were able to do.

All course material is accessible through a user-friendly online platform and the homework is divided into two parts: the "mandatory" grammar excercises and the "Lesestoff" which consists of addtional material (podcats, articles, videos, etc.) and one can take advantage from to learn more about German culture and improve their reading and listening skills. This subdivision was really helpful during busy weeks to select what had to be done before class and what could eventually be postponed by a few days.

Her pivate lessons are adapted to the level, needs and interests of the students. Indeed, after I made the decision to move to Austria, she personalized the classes using, e.g. videos related to Austrian culture or speaking activities related to apartment hunting.

Finally, she went above and beyond designing her own Advent calendar (and Spring calendar!) assembling fun facts, songs and recipes for the enjoyment of young and old alike."

"Frieda Dean has been my German teacher for one full year. I started in the classroom setting at South Seattle Community College. Frieda was always warm and welcoming. As in any classroom setting, the teacher's challenge is to recognize the multiple learning styles of her students and juggle the challenges of the students' varying abilities. Frieda exhibited a strong sensitivity and knowledge of all her students' learning styles and speeds. Frieda kept the content challenging while addressing individual student needs.
